Summary

Longing for Something Bigger

From the Eisner Award-nominated Inio Asano, creator of Solanin and Nijigahara Holograph, comes one of his most challenging works yet; an intense teen romance set in what may at first glance be one of the sleepiest places in Japan。

When Koume and Keisuke's relationship begins to take shape, it is apparent that they are both searching for something。 Maybe Keisuke wants something more than a kiss from the fair Koume。 Maybe Koume is looking for someone better than Misaki, the local playboy。 But what they find in each other over the course of a summer might be far greater than anything they were expecting。

Their lives are going to change。 And this will all transpire before high school exams!

At times beautiful and poignant, ‘Girl on the Shore’ further demonstrates the intricacy of Asano Inio’s work。 The story, however, is somewhat lacklustre, while veering on the perverse。 In particular, the primary characters are pretty unlikeable。 Their flawed relationship is believable, striking of real lived experience, but, for me, that isn’t enough to sustain。 Though there is a good exploration of teenage angst and early sexual cravings, ultimately I thought the end result a little underwhelmi At times beautiful and poignant, ‘Girl on the Shore’ further demonstrates the intricacy of Asano Inio’s work。 The story, however, is somewhat lacklustre, while veering on the perverse。 In particular, the primary characters are pretty unlikeable。 Their flawed relationship is believable, striking of real lived experience, but, for me, that isn’t enough to sustain。 Though there is a good exploration of teenage angst and early sexual cravings, ultimately I thought the end result a little underwhelming。 That being said, the depiction of loneliness and emptiness, when paired with Asano’s astounding artwork, has left a lasting impression。 So long as you don’t expect a substantial narrative, there is no arguing against the impact of briefly peeking through at these two anguished souls。 。。。more

Definitely not Asano's best work。 It was originally published in an erotica magazine, so it's great by the low standards of porn。 It's just not up to his normal, Eisner Award winning standards。 I understand what he was trying to do。 He wanted to break away from the unrealistic and idealized love of cheesy romance manga and show how shit REALLY works in the 8th grade! Lots of teenage angst, depression, drugs, and loveless sex。 However, Asano's desire to showcase the dark and grotesque goes a bit Definitely not Asano's best work。 It was originally published in an erotica magazine, so it's great by the low standards of porn。 It's just not up to his normal, Eisner Award winning standards。 I understand what he was trying to do。 He wanted to break away from the unrealistic and idealized love of cheesy romance manga and show how shit REALLY works in the 8th grade! Lots of teenage angst, depression, drugs, and loveless sex。 However, Asano's desire to showcase the dark and grotesque goes a bit far。 Half the dialogue ends up sounding like some R9K shitpost。 When the bullied geek finally gets his revenge on the bullies, it goes full green text。 > be me> be in 8th grade。> Be depressed。 School jock bullied my brother into suicide。 He killed himself on my birthday and they laughed in my face about it。 Chads have never suffered a day in their lives。 Us beta males have to endure a living Hell in the harsh world of 8th grade! > One day, I walk up to Chad Thundercock and call him a C$&T。 I tell him that I've been doing some filthy sex acts with his childhood crush。 He gets mad and punches me, but I don't even care。 Then he tries to tackle me off the stairs and misses。 Breaks both legs and an arm。 I walk out of there like a badass! Later that week, I go to the video store and encounter 2 other bullies having sex with a couple thots in an alley。。。during a heavy rainstorm。 I beat them up using a cattle prod and a baseball bat! I then call the police and report that I saw some hooligans fighting。 I knew the backpack they were carrying was filled with hard drugs, so they'll go to jail for 20 years。 I then dumped the stupid whore that was using me as a sex toy after we had anal sex and she pooped on me。 She'll get another boyfriend though because life is on easy mode for hot dumb chicks! This is what being 13 is REALLY like! 。。。more

Asano has a way of depicting depravity, deep human pain, and turmoil in his spreads。 He ways of completely diluting emotion and understanding upon the glances of his characters across each page。

This is one of the few artworks I don't know what the fuck to get out of it。 Like my life, if I have to say。It's crude, random and doesn't follow a real logic; it's one of the most realistic courses there could be, and like for the people I see around me in life- I don't really get the final decisions of the characters。We followed them closely and we start to think that we get them: we simpathize or at least comprehend why they act like that and we think we can grasp what they'll be up to until This is one of the few artworks I don't know what the fuck to get out of it。 Like my life, if I have to say。It's crude, random and doesn't follow a real logic; it's one of the most realistic courses there could be, and like for the people I see around me in life- I don't really get the final decisions of the characters。We followed them closely and we start to think that we get them: we simpathize or at least comprehend why they act like that and we think we can grasp what they'll be up to until when, suddenly, they change and take an abrupt turn。 We're reminded once again that you won't ever fully get others, neither we can think to get along with them in life because there will always be a turning point (for them or yourself) that only the one concerned is seeing and that could change everything。 One time we are Koume, the other we are Isobe, and the other one Kashima。 Like all the characters in the manga, we in the world are this entities that both manipulate and are left behind, that are directioned and direct oneselves and the others, knowingly or not。 In an endless circle。 Single pieces that live thanks to others but won't stay connected。 There isn't an intended, specific meaning to search in this story for me, because everything in life is more "big, and wider" than us to be grasped fully。 I think that's what the author wanted us to feel, or at least that's what I was left with after finishing this artwork。 Like if I just lived a piece of life, not especially clear or satisfying, but in having made a connection, it definetely changed me。 May it be a little, or greatly。To end this, my opinion on Asano's use of sex: it's a way to express how the protagonists cope with themselves。 It gets weirder and more twisted the more they try to process what they feel, or want。 There's nothing more direct and raw than the depiction of sex and I think it's perfect to use as a metaphor for depicting emotions and connections。 I approve it。 If it disturbs you is because you aren't fully at peace with exploring yourself honestly。 。。。more
